NSW Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC)

The NSW Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) is a challenge set by the NSW Premier to challenge each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely. At Blaxcell Street Public School students in years K-2 complete the challenge (read 30 books with 25 of them from the K-2 PRC reading list) in class with their teacher and students in years 3-6 complete the challenge (read 20 books with 15 of them from the 3-6 PRC reading list) independently with the assistance of their classroom teacher and the teacher librarian. The library provides stickers on school library books to assist students in recognising the PRC reading level of library books:

  • Years K-2 k-2
  • Years 3-4 3-4
  • Years 5-6 5-6

Not all books are on the PRC list. Students are allowed to read up to 5 personal choice books that they can add to their PRC list (in the personal choice section). Students who complete the challenge receive a certificate for their efforts. On student's 4th year of completing the PRC they receive a gold award, and on student's 7th year completing the PRC they receive a platinum award.

Book Week

Each year, Blaxcell Street Public School and many other Australian schools and public libraries spend a week celebrating books, authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians, and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions, and read stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.

Book Fair

Blaxcell Street Public School holds a book fair every year during Book Week. Books for the book fair are supplied by the Scholastic Book Company and range in price from $1 to $20.

All proceeds from the book fair go towards purchasing new books and games for the school library. These are some of the great books and games our school purchased with the proceeds raised from the book fair.

Book Character Parade

Blaxcell Street Public School holds an annual Book Character Parade. Students and teachers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character and bring a copy of the book. Every year we see many fantastic costumes and a variety of prizes are given out. The Book Character Parade is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate children's literature.
